We are committed to supporting sustainable livelihoods in rural communities and maintaining their cultural, social and natural environment.
We are using resources as if we had two planets, not one.
There can be no 'plan B' because there is no 'planet B.'
Make Cities and Human Settlements Inclusive, Safe, Resilient and Sustainable
UN Sustainable Development Goal 11
Our activities depend on the generosity of people like you. Your donation helps communities regenerate and achieve a sustainable future. At least 80% of your contribution is delivered to vetted local groups and NGOs that support women and youth, preserve the environment and help small business thrive.
Looking for unique gifts created by local artisans? We identify select artisans in our communities and their traditional art can be purchased here and shipped anywhere. By purchasing their hand-made products you directly help them preserve their cultural heritage.
Travel will never be the same again. At SRDI we have supported sustainable, community based and designed tourism since our inception. Our own Black Sea Sustainable Tourism Program offers unique experiential trips and directly supports improved livelihoods.
We believe that in every community there are people who want to make their home a better place
Entrepreneurs in Sri Lanka turn from tourism to farming
In 2019 Sri Lanka took a crushing blow with the Easter Sunday bombings and tourism collapsed. In 2020 the impact on an already struggling sector, especially those who worked in the value chain, was made worse when COVID struck.
Thanks to the efforts of a private travel company, Serene Vacations Lanka (Pvt) Limited, a group of former tourism workers who had lost their livelihoods took a new approach. The mushroom farms of Sri Lanka are a way for small families can start a new business and provide much needed income and a sustainable source of food and livelihood for themselves and their local communities.
SRDI is pleased to have provided help to build the mushroom production facilities. But they need more to expand their work. Please consider helping the new mushroom farmers build a new life by making a small contribution.
